A Little About Bavaria
Bavaria’s heart and soul lie in its diverse landscapes, historic cities, and a culture deeply intertwined with its food and drink traditions. As the largest state in Germany, Bavaria encompasses much more than the Franconian region to the north; it is also home to alpine landscapes, lush forests, and lively cities, each with its own distinct identity. At the forefront of Bavarian culture is Munich, the capital city, which captures Bavaria’s traditions and modernity in equal measure. Visiting Munich in the spring offers a unique perspective on Bavarian life, as the city shakes off the winter chill and welcomes warmer days with open-air festivals, beer gardens, and outdoor markets.
Munich in the spring is a celebration of Bavarian warmth and hospitality. The city’s famous beer gardens begin to reopen as locals and visitors flock to iconic spots like the Englischer Garten and Viktualienmarkt to enjoy the fresh air, local brews, and hearty Bavarian dishes. Springtime brings fresh asparagus, or “Spargel,” to menus, celebrated in simple, delicious dishes that highlight the quality of local produce. White asparagus, in particular, is a seasonal favorite in Bavaria and pairs beautifully with hollandaise sauce and local meats. These spring foods are best enjoyed under the chestnut trees of a beer garden, where the social aspect of Bavarian dining shines as friends and strangers gather at long tables to share in the festivities.
Beyond the beer gardens, Munich also embraces spring with lively events, such as Frühlingsfest, or “Spring Festival,” which is often called the “Little Oktoberfest.” Held at the Theresienwiese fairgrounds, Frühlingsfest showcases Munich’s love for celebration with rides, traditional Bavarian music, and, of course, beer tents. Here, visitors can experience the jovial spirit of Bavarian festivals without the immense crowds of Oktoberfest, making it a perfect way to enjoy the city’s vibrant culture in a more relaxed setting. Strolling through Munich in the spring, one can truly feel the city’s pulse—its rich history, its love for seasonal food, and its unwavering sense of community, all coming together in a celebration of Bavarian life.
Franconia - Bavaria's neighbor to the North
Franconia, a picturesque region in northern Bavaria, boasts a culinary and cultural landscape distinct from the rest of Germany. Known for its rolling vineyards, medieval towns, and vibrant traditions, Franconia offers a unique blend of flavors and experiences. From hearty dishes to artisan beers, this area is steeped in culinary heritage, deeply influenced by its agricultural roots and historical context. As one travels through Franconia, the region’s dedication to its traditions is evident not only in the food but in the architecture, festivals, and warm hospitality of its people.
Nuremberg, the largest city in Franconia, is a prime destination for food enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Famous for its Nürnberger Rostbratwurst, these small sausages have a unique flavor that is beloved both locally and internationally. Typically served with sauerkraut or potato salad, they reflect the rustic, comforting cuisine characteristic of the region. Beyond its culinary delights, Nuremberg is rich in medieval architecture, from the imposing Nuremberg Castle to the charming old town squares, where open-air markets bustle with local produce, artisanal bread, and sweets. The city’s blend of medieval and modern elements creates a vibrant backdrop for exploring Franconian traditions.
Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage site, adds another dimension to Franconian culture with its distinctive beers and charming riverfront architecture. Bamberg is famous for its smoked beer, or Rauchbier, a unique brew with a deep, smoky flavor created by smoking the malt over an open flame. This tradition dates back centuries, and Bamberg remains one of the few places in the world where this style is preserved. In addition to its breweries, Bamberg is a city of beautiful medieval and baroque architecture, with winding alleys and the iconic half-timbered Altes Rathaus perched on an island in the Regnitz River. Here, the culinary and cultural experiences intermingle, inviting visitors to slow down, sip a beer, and savor the unique flavors and stories of Franconia.
Our tour starts in the heart of Bavaria – Munich, before venturing on to the Franconian region where we will experience the best beer in the region.

Welcome to Munich! As soon as everyone arrives, we’ll gather at Airbräu, the unique brewery right inside the Munich Airport. It’s the perfect spot to kick off our trip with a quick welcome before we take the train into the city. After a short ride, we’ll head to our hotel, Holiday Inn Munich City East, where you can drop off your luggage and get settled in.
The first day we’ll take it easy during the day. Once our luggage is dropped off, you can relax at the hotel while the friendly staff readies your room or you can join us at the Viktualiemarkt, Munich’s main farmer’s market for some lunch and a leisurely stroll through the market stalls. In the evening, we’ll gather for dinner at Bratwursthäusle, a beloved institution in Nuremberg with roots dating back to the early 14th century. Situated next to the beautiful St. Sebaldus Church, Bratwursthäusle has long been celebrated for its authentic Nürnberger Rostbratwurst, a specialty that has captivated locals and visitors alike for centuries. These sausages are hand-made on-site from finely minced pork, seasoned with a signature blend of spices, and grilled to perfection over a beechwood fire—a traditional method that imparts a unique, smoky flavor.
The restaurant itself is steeped in history, with its rustic timbered walls, cozy interiors, and lively atmosphere reflecting the timeless charm of Nuremberg. Bratwursthäusle is not only a place to enjoy a meal but a portal into the city’s culinary past, where centuries-old recipes are kept alive. Each sausage is typically served with tangy sauerkraut or potato salad, both prepared using traditional Franconian recipes that highlight the hearty flavors of the region. After a day filled with local flavors and cultural experiences, this meal at Bratwursthäusle is the perfect way to unwind. You might choose to stay for an extra round, soaking in the cozy atmosphere, or head back out to explore Nuremberg’s lively streets, where modern bars and historic buildings stand side by side, adding another layer to the city’s fascinating blend of old and new.
Day 6: Thursday May 1st, 2025 | Nuremberg
Day six begins with breakfast at the hotel, setting the stage for another exciting day in Nuremberg.
In the late morning, we’ll make our way to Altstadthof Brewery, nestled in the heart of Nuremberg’s historic old town, for an immersive brewery tour. Founded in the early 1980s, Altstadthof is one of the pioneering breweries that helped revive traditional Franconian beer styles after decades of modern brewing trends. Known especially for their “Rotbier” or red beer, Altstadthof draws on centuries-old brewing techniques to create a unique, richly flavored beer that has become a regional specialty. During the tour, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at their small-batch brewing process, which emphasizes quality and tradition, with each step handled meticulously to ensure every beer embodies the essence of Franconia.

Established in 1419, this historic eatery has been serving traditional Nürnberger Rostbratwurst for over 600 years, keeping alive a culinary tradition that is as much a part of the city’s heritage as its medieval architecture. Nestled within a charming half-timbered building, Zum Gulden Stern exudes an old-world warmth, with rustic wooden tables, flickering candles, and walls adorned with artifacts that tell the story of Nuremberg’s storied past.
Here, you’ll enjoy the restaurant’s signature sausages, carefully grilled over a fragrant beechwood fire that imparts a distinct, smoky flavor. These sausages are smaller than typical bratwursts but pack a delicious punch with their unique blend of spices and finely ground pork, seasoned just as they were centuries ago. Each plate is traditionally served with sides like freshly prepared sauerkraut and warm, crusty Franconian bread, bringing a taste of authentic, local flavors right to your table.
